Anti-fur Day of Action in Manchester
10 September 2005

demo Over 20 people turned out for the anti fur demos in Manchester on the ARC meeting weekend. It was planned to hold protests outside show shop, Mode in Pelle, as they are selling boots and handbags made from rabbit fur. On the way to check out that these items were still on sale, two other shops were found selling boots either trimmed or made entirely from rabbit fur: Kurt Geiger and Shoon.

It was decided to hold 3 demos simultaneously and the effect was amazing. The demos were positively vocal and highly visual. Kurt Geiger and Shoon are only one shop apart from each other which made the whole presence particularly impressive! Different police were called to the protests several times, all giving varying degrees of threats of arrests, but soon scuttled off when it was apparent the protesters wouldn't be bullied!

Kurt Geiger took the boots off sale mid-demo and one of the staff members came out and told the protesters that they looked stupid now because they do not have them on the shelves! It was politely pointed out that until Kurt Geiger gave a no-fur policy, then the protests would continue!

demoThe day was a huge success, with over a thousand leaflets handed out and many people saying they would boycott the stores. Several people also approached the protests, wanting to get involved which was very inspiring!

After the protests, all three stores were contacted, asking if they would be withdrawing the fur before protests the following Saturday. Mode in Pelle responded saying they have removed all the fur items from stock (this was verified in person at the Manchester store). MAP congratulate Mode in Pelle on this move and hope that the other two will follow suit!
