Campaign launched against William Hill (Kill)
2 August 2005
Greyhound Action has launched Virtual Virtues, a major campaign to persuade bookmakers
to cease their involvement in greyhound racing and concentrate on virtual (computerised)
racing instead.
First focus of the campaign is William Hill, because they put more money into
dog racing than any other bookie.
William Hill own two greyhound stadiums (at Sunderland and Newcastle-upon-Tyne)
and the company pour millions of pounds into greyhound racing every year, through
their betting-shops, on-line betting, digital racing channel and sponsorship
of races, such as the Greyhound Derby.

As most of the MAP campaigners were at the SPEAK demo during the Greyhound
Remembrance weekend, we decided to hold a demo at William Hill the following
weekend. Hundreds of leaflets were given out during the 3 hour demo and many
positive conversations were had.
Gemma the rescued greyhound joined the protest, attracting lots of positive
attention. Many people approached Gemma which presented the opportunity of
informing the public about the atrocities that happen to greyhounds once their
racing lives are over, and pointing out that Gemma (see pic above) was one
of the very few lucky greyhounds, who can now live out the rest of her natural
life
in
a loving
home. The emphasis was on encouraging people not to bet on greyhound racing
and many people said they didn't but would pass the information onto people
they knew who did gamble on animals lives.
During the protest many members of the passing public stopping to find
out more about the cruelty involved in greyhound racing.
